What to bring:
Swimsuit, shorts, windbreaker, cap, suntan lotion. The weather on the lake can change quickly, bring at least one fleece sweater and jeans. Running shoes for use on deck.
What to expect:
The mornings on the lake are usually much calmer than the afternoons. We will use the calmer times to learn about sailing, the rules of navigation and right of way. Safety and crew overboard rescue exercises will come first. Each sailor will have a turn at the helm, and at each station throughout the boat. Winch, sail trim main, sail trim jib and navigation. Operating the sail boat with the engine only will also be taught. You will be introduced to the marine compass, GPS, and RADAR. Those wanting to take the PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operators Card) certification will be given a chance to test on the final day of the camp. You will also be introduced to the VHF marine radio; specifically how to use it in an emergency situation. We will teach you the basics of cold water survival, and how to keep yourself safe on a boat. AND we will have a riot sailing the boat as fast as we can and enjoying the lake as we head from the marina to our daily destinations out into Superior's open water and back. Sailing time is 10:30-2:30.
At our destinations we will have time for a swim, lunch and laze around viewing the wildlife before returning. The way back is usually when the winds will build and the boat will really get going.
The Teen Camp is a simplified version of the Competent Crew course offered in our ISPA sailing school. When you are finished, you will be comfortable knowing how to assist in anchoring a boat, assist in docking the boat and in an emergency securing the sails and gear and calling on the VHF with your position and conditions of your emergency. You will also be confident enough to handle basic sailing tasks such as raising and lowering sails, riding the weather rail and tacking. All very useful skills if you are interested in joining the fleet racing crews.
NEW for 2008, as part of the course we will also be sailing Cal 20 keelboats. Campers 16 and older, once you have completed this week of sailing camp, will be able to join Club Sail Superior and sail these boats yourself.
